join the art group

In 1946 a group of seven artists met at a local school wishing to share skills and enthusiasms and organise joint art exhibitions. They went on to found the Exmouth Society of Arts receiving a small subsidy from the Arts Council of Great Britain. In October 1952 the Society was disbanded and Exmouth Art Group, which had been a sub-group of the Society, continued as an independent body. A President was elected and remained in office until 1970.

The original aim of Exmouth Art Group was “to encourage the appreciation and practice of the visual arts in this district” by:

  • organising and supporting all art exhibitions and lectures on art
  • holding regular exhibitions of members work
  • holding regular meetings for talks and discussion on Art
  • providing amenities for outdoor and indoor sketching groups
  • making public the opinion of the Group on matters affecting the artistic appearance of the town and district

The aims and objectives of the Group, now with more than 200 members, remain the same. Since 1955 we have been fortunate to have the unfailing support of the Lindsay-Fynn family and today Nigel and Heleen Lindsay-Fynn are second generation Patrons of the Group.
