About the Group
The Art Group started as a separate sub-group of the Exmouth Society of Arts, which was formed in 1946 to cover art, music, photography, literary and other activities, receiving a small subsidy from the Arts Council of Great Britain. However, in October 1952 the Society was wound up and the Exmouth Art Group then continued as an independent body.
The original aims of the Group were:
To encourage the appreciation and practice of the Graphic Arts in this district by the following means:
- By supporting all Art Exhibitions and lectures on Art organised by the Society of Arts (includes the Art Group itself)
- By holding regular exhibitions of members work
- By holding regular meetings for talks and discussion on Art
- By providing amenities for outdoor and indoor sketching groups
- By making public the opinion of the Group on matters affecting the artistic appearance of the town and district
These aims remain the same today, and with the continuing support of the membership will be fulfilled for the foreseeable future.
