Paul James

Born in 1947 and educated at Kidderminster and Bourne, Lincolnshire. I became a pupil of the Peterborough Diocesan Architect and studied at Peterborough and Exeter colleges.

Design, colour and modelling were an integral part of my thirty five year career in Architecture. After semi-retirement due to ill health in 1997, I began painting as a pastime and joined Exmouth Art Group of which I was a committee member for many years in various roles.

Beginning with watercolour and moving on through pastels and acrylics my work has encompassed representational, hyper-realistic and abstract styles. Inspired by, among others, MC Escher, Akiyoshi Kitaoka, Victor Vasarely and Patrick Hughes, visual illusions and constructions with unconventional perspective have been the main themes of much of my recent work.
