We are a dynamic, vibrant group and each year have a full and varied schedule of events and activities enabling members to come together to share their enthusiasms and passions for the visual arts.
On the first and third TUESDAY EVENING of each month we meet for a programme of talks, demonstrations, competitions and critique. We enjoy presentations by experienced and interesting local artists and schedule a variety of eclectic competition themes.
On THURSDAY MORNINGS we have open, informal sessions with the the focus decided by consensus of members. Subjects span the full spectrum of artistic method including iPad Art supplemented with workshops and demonstrations led by guest artists. Inspired by our location by the Exe Estuary in the summer we enjoy plein air working at a number of different locations.
And new for 2018 we will offer a THURSDAY AFTERNOON session. Starting on 22nd February 1pm-4pm and members interested in Experiment, Revision, Discussion and Development are invited to just come along with their painting materials.
All subscribed members are welcome to come to all or any of the above meetings and are also eligible to enter the two exhibitions we hold annually at the Ocean complex on Exmouth seafront. In May, participating in the Exmouth Festival, we will be on the ground floor of the Premier Inn and in October on the second floor Estuary Suite at Ocean. Both venues overlook the Exe Estuary and the large picture windows and outside amenities allow access to the stunning views of this area of outstanding natural beauty. A wonderful source of inspiration for the artists!
As often as possible visits to art based events are arranged. Destinations, often proposed by members, have taken in the National Museum in Cardiff, Penlee House in Penzance and galleries in Bath. We always go to the Bristol RWA Open Exhibition in the autumn. We are very much a community group and so our social calendar is an important aspect including a summer champagne reception hosted by our Patrons.
If you are interested in joining us then please contact our Membership Secretary at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the Group Manager on 01395 260591,
The THURSDAY MORNING GROUP meets ever week in the Sea Cadets Hall on Camperdown Terrace from 9:30am to 12 noon with a short break for Christmas. The last session this year will be on 13th December, with none scheduled for 20th and 27th December, and we start again on 3rd January 2018.
This is a very popular, lively group and the number we can accommodate is limited by the space available at the Hall. Members interested in joining the Thursday morning sessions should contact Carol Jackson, the Group Coordinator, to find out the situation and if necessary she will add your name to the waiting list. The meetings are informal and open to all members and provide a forum for members to share expertise, enthusiasms and interests, learn new techniques from visiting demonstrators and participate in workshops which are usually held at the Manor Hotel.
The location of the venue, adjacent to the Estuary, offers a wonderful opportunity for some plein air working and in the summer months, weather permitting, different members volunteer to arrange outdoor sketching outings at this and other locations.
The Group meets on the first and third Tuesday of most months from 7:00pm to 9:00pm in the Exmouth Sea Cadets Hall. This is an ideal opportunity to socialise and catch up with members, enjoy competitions, talks and demonstrations by guest speakers and practitioners.
COMPETITION EVENINGS are scheduled for the first Tuesday of the month. Members are invited to bring along one or two artworks to a prescribed theme and/or in a required media and a small cash prize is presented to the artist whose piece receives the most votes by those at the meeting. This is followed by a group discussion and informal critique of entries.
On the third Tuesday of the month the Programme Coordinator will have arranged either a TALK or DEMONSTRATION by an artist or guest speaker invited to share their specialist expertise, skills and knowledge. This can be someone living locally in the south west or a Group member. Please visit our EVENTS page for details of the full evening programme.
All subscribed members are eligible to enter the two exhibitions we hold each year. In May, as part of Exmouth Festival, we showed for the first time at the Premier Inn and will return to the impressive Ocean complex in October. At both venues on Exmouth seafront it is possible to purchase refreshments and benefit from stunning views of the Exe Estuary.
This year at the Exmouth Festival Exhibition the very talented Helen Plant, from Planties Creative, ran some very successful children workshops. The children were very creative in making art from waste materials and having a go at printmaking. The frieze made from their work was displayed in our Exhibition over last few days and much admired.
For our celebrated Autumn Exhibition, and this year it will be our 73rd event, we will be again on the stunning second floor Estuary suite with the chance to enjoy those wonderful views of the Estuary from the adjacent and extensive balcony. 2017 Exhibition Preview Evening
Our exhibitions always give an excellent reflection of the wealth of talent within the Group and an opportunity to purchase an original piece of artwork. At our Autumn Exhibition an average of more than half the membership exhibit something like 500 framed, 3D and folio pieces and the show generally attracts an excess of 2000 visitors. There is an added advantage of meeting and chatting to members stewarding the events. The Preview this year is on Wednesday 3rd October 2018 and the show opens to the public from Thursday 4th October to Sunday 14th 10am to 6pm. Not to be missed we think!
Throughout the year trips to art based events are arranged with destinations frequently proposed by members.
We always go to the RWA Open Exhibition in Bristol providing for the chance to be inspired by the work of new, emerging and established artists. The event is the largest open exhibition in the south west and always on display is a wide variety of media and styles by both first time exhibitors and some of UK's leading artists. We tend to go toward the end of the event in November , beginning of December so there is an opportunity for some early Christmas shopping.
We have had previous excursions to the National Museum in Cardiff and Penlee House in Penzance and last year Topsham Art Group invited us and other local groups to join a visit to the Bruegel Exhibition at the Holburne Museum in Bath. Email email@example.com for further details.
We are very much a community group and so our social calendar is an important aspect. In the summer our Patrons, Nigel and Heleen Lindsay-Fynn invite members to a Canapè and Champagne Reception in the grounds of their beautiful home Lee Ford in Budleigh Salterton. This is always a convivial and relaxed occasion and we are usually most fortunate with the weather. There is an opportunity to look round the extensive gardens and have a tour of the stunning interior. There is a traditional competition to a theme set by Mr and Mrs Lindsay-Fynn with a generous cash prize and delicious garden produce.
We celebrate the festive season with a Christmas Party at the Manor Hotel when members enjoy a finger buffet, quizzes, the Roger Matthews Cup competition, raffle and of course some very good company.
