We are a vibrant group and each year have a full and varied schedule of events and activities enabling members to come together to share their enthusiasms and passions for the visual arts.
On a Thursday morning of most weeks we have open, informal sessions which we hold in the Sea Cadets Hall on Camperdown Terrace. The the focus for these sessions is decided by consensus. Subjects have ranged from a portrait workshop, silk painting and IPad art and in the summer there is the opportunity for plein air working. Everyone is welcome to join this popular group and to recommend potential themes.
On the first and third Tuesday evening of each month, we meet at the Sea Cadets Hall on Camperdown Terrace for a programme of talks, demonstrations and competitions. We enjoy presentations by exemplary artists and many eclectic competition themes.
All subscribed members are eligible to enter the two exhibitions we hold annually at the Ocean complex on Exmouth seafront. In May, participating in the Exmouth Festival, we are on the first floor and in October on the second floor Estuary Suite. The venue overlooks the Exe Estuary and the large picture windows and outside balconies allow access to some stunning views of this area of outstanding natural beauty. A wonderful source of inspiration for the artists!
As often as possible visits to art based events are arranged. Destinations, often proposed by members, have taken in the National Museum in Cardiff, Penlee House in Penzance and galleries in Bath. We always go to the Bristol RWA Open Exhibition in the autumn.
We are very much a community group and so our social calendar is an important aspect including a summer champagne reception hosted by our Patrons.
The Thursday Morning Art Group meets ever week in the Sea Cadets Hall from 9:30am to 12 noon with a short break for Christmas. The last session this year will be on 14th December, with none scheduled for 21st and 28th December, and we start again on 4th January 2018.
Please note this is a very popular group and the number we can accommodate is limited by the space available at the Hall. Members interested in joining the Thursday morning sessions should contact Carol Jackson, the Group Coordinator, to find out the situation and if necessary she will add your name to the waiting list.
The meetings are informal and open to all members and provide a forum for members to share expertise, enthusiasms and interests, learn new techniques from visiting demonstrators and participate in workshops. The morning usually starts with a ten minute warm up session and recent demonstrations and workshops have included Pastels with Rebecca de Mendonca, IPad Art with Liz Smerdon, Acrylics with Greg Wellman and Skies and Trees with John Cowlishaw. We have also tried Drawing Soft Toys, Chinese Painting, Drawing People Upside Down, Paper Cut Outs, Watercolour Backgrounds. The themes are as eclectic as the artists!
The location of the venue, adjacent to the Estuary, offers a wonderful opportunity for some plein air working and in the summer months, weather permitting, different members volunteer to arrange outdoor sketching outings at this and other locations.
The Group meets on the first and third Tuesday of most months from 7:00pm to 9:00pm in the Exmouth Sea Cadets Hall. This is an ideal opportunity to socialise and catch up with members, enjoy competitions, talks and demonstrations by guest speakers and practitioners.
COMPETITION EVENINGS are scheduled for the first Tuesday of the month. Members are invited to bring along one or two artworks to a prescribed theme and/or in a required media and a small cash prize is presented to the artist whose piece receives the most votes by those at the meeting. This is followed by a group discussion and impartial critique of all the entries.
On the third Tuesday of the month the Programme Coordinator will have arranged either a TALK or DEMONSTRATION by an artist or guest speaker invited to share their specialist expertise, skills and knowledge. This can be someone living locally in the south west or a Group member. Please visit our EVENTS page for details of the full evening programme.
All subscribed members are eligible to enter the two exhibitions which we hold annually in the impressive Ocean complex on Exmouth seafront. With the picture windows the venue offers some stunning views of the Exe Estuary and there is the opportunity to relax and enjoy light refreshments either inside or outdoors on the large adjacent balconies.
In May 2017 we will be on the first floor, participating in the Exmouth Festival, with an exhibition of members' paintings, a display of work from pupils of the Beacon School plus several art related workshops for children offered by Sam Wood from Creation Station and Helen Plant a textile artist running Planties Creative.
For our celebrated Autumn Exhibition, and this year will be our 71st event, we will be again in the stunning second floor Estuary suite.
Both shows provide an excellent reflection of the creative talents of Group members plus an opportunity to purchase an original piece of artwork. At our Autumn Exhibition an average of more than half the membership exhibit something like 500 framed, 3D and folio pieces and the show generally attracts an excess of 2000 visitors. There is an added advantage of meeting and chatting to members stewarding the events. Dates for the current year are:
Exmouth Festival Exhibition
Saturday 27th May to Saturday 3rd June
First Floor, Ocean, Exmouth Seafront
71st Annual Exhibition
Friday 13th to Sunday 22nd October
Preview Thursday 12th October
Second Floor, Ocean, Exmouth Seafront
Throughout the year trips to art based events are arranged with destinations frequently proposed by members.
We always go to the RWA Open Exhibition in Bristol providing for the chance to be inspired by the work of new, emerging and established artists. The event is the largest open exhibition in the south west and always on display is a wide variety of media and styles by both first time exhibitors and some of UK's leading artists. We tend to go toward the end of the event in November so there is an opportunity for some early Christmas shopping.
We have had previous excursions to the National Museum in Cardiff and Penlee House in Penzance and this year Topsham Art Group has invited us and other local groups to join a visit to the Bruegel Exhibition at the Holburne Museum in Bath. A coach will pick up from Budleigh, Exmouth, Lympstone and Topsham and the cost is just £15 per person plus exhibition entry. Email email@example.com for further details.
We are very much a community group and so our social calendar is an important aspect. In the summer our Patrons, Nigel and Heleen Lindsay-Fynn invite members to a Canapè and Champagne Reception in the grounds of their beautiful home Lee Ford in Budleigh Salterton. This is always a convivial and relaxed occasion and we are usually most fortunate with the weather. There is an opportunity to look round the extensive gardens and have a tour of the stunning interior. There is a traditional competition to a theme set by Mr and Mrs Lindsay-Fynn with a generous cash prize and delicious garden produce. We celebrate the festive season with a Christmas Party in the Holy Trinity Church on Rolle Street when members enjoy a finger buffet, quizzes, the Roger Matthews Cup competition, raffle and of course some very good company.
